Common Laundry Center Problems We Fix

Laundry centers have a funny way of letting you know something’s wrong, sometimes loudly, sometimes subtly, sometimes by simply refusing to do anything at all. And because these units combine both a washer and a dryer, there are twice as many parts that can drift out of sync. Thanks to our years of laundry center repairs experience, our team can quickly diagnose the most common problems and fix them immediately!

Here are the most common problems we fix and what causes them:

When a unit goes completely silent, it’s usually tied to the control board, the power supply, or a faulty door switch. The board is basically the “brain,” directing every cycle, so even a small failure there can shut everything down. Door switches also stop the machine from running if they can’t confirm the door is closed.

Grinding, thumping, rattling, every noise points to something different. Most of the time it’s worn drum bearings, loose pulleys, or suspension rods that have lost their tension. Those suspension rods are what keep the drum balanced when it’s spinning, once they weaken, the whole machine starts dancing across the floor.

Leaks usually come from the parts you never see, the inlet hoses, drain pump, tub-to-pump hose, or even the door boot seal. The pump is responsible for pulling water out of the tub, and if it cracks or clogs, it’ll leak underneath.

Most modern laundry centers use error codes to flag issues with sensors or electrical components. A flashing light might be telling you the pressure switch can’t read the water level, or that a temperature sensor in the dryer is out of range.

A no-spin issue usually comes back to the drive belt, the motor, or the lid/door lock. The belt connects the motor to the drum, so if it slips or snaps, the washer can go through the motions but the drum stays still. Sensors also prevent spinning if the machine thinks the door isn’t secured, even when it actually is.

The heating system depends on the element (or gas burner), thermostats, and thermal fuses. The element is what physically produces heat, and the thermostats regulate how hot things can get. When any of these fail, the dryer will run forever without warming up.

For slow filling, the inlet valves are usually the culprit. They control the flow of water into the machine and can clog with sediment over time. Slow draining is the opposite end of the system, the drain pump or drain hose gets blocked, causing the tub to stay full long after the cycle ends.

If your laundry center is fairly new and the issue is something like a belt, motor, or control board, a repair is usually much more cost-effective than a full replacement. But if it’s an older unit with multiple failing components or persistent leaks, it might make more sense to invest in a new machine.

Most stackable or combo units last between 8 to 12 years, depending on usage and maintenance. Heavy daily use or lack of regular upkeep can shorten that lifespan, while proper cleaning, balanced loads, and timely repairs can keep yours going longer.

Odors usually come from trapped moisture and detergent buildup in the drum, seals, or drain hoses. Mold and mildew can develop quickly in stacked units because air circulation is limited. Regular cleaning of the drum, door seal, and detergent dispenser helps prevent that musty smell.

Excessive shaking often comes from unbalanced loads, worn suspension rods, or failing drum bearings. These parts are essential for keeping the washer steady while spinning. A pro can inspect and replace the worn components to restore smooth operation.

Not necessarily, but they do have more compact, interconnected parts, which means a single failing component can affect both washing and drying. Heavy use, high humidity, or overloading the unit can make repairs more frequent compared to standard, separate washers and dryers.
